Fiddler/Composer, House Steward to the Duke of Gordon, born Fochabers (1748-1833) Published four collections (one posthumously) containing approx. 287 of his own compositions): (1) "A Collection of Strathspeys, Reels ..." Edinburgh (1781) 12pp. (2) "A Second Book ..." (as above ? Bound together, 4pp) (3) "Marshall's Scottish Airs, Melodies ..." (1822) 60pp. (4) "Vol.2nd. of a Collection of Scottish Melodies" (1845) 35pp. (posthumously); also "Kinrara" etc. (Edinburgh 1800) 2pp. [NLS: M4v1 & 2 - Glen 386; M4v3 - Glen 284(1); M4v4 (the posthumous work) 284(2), also bound together]. Wm. Marshall or his heirs re-titled some of his early works in later publications, so his music requires careful scrutiny. NOTE: Marshall acquired the style "of Keithmore" in the 1790s when he moved to a large farm on the Gordon estate and acted as the Duke's Factor until 1817.
